An Historic Day

My roommate had never seen Rocky before. I am, admittedly, obsessed with the show and mentioned we should have a marathon. I don't think I actually thought it would happen, but a couple weeks ago I unveiled Rocky (I) in my living room and it was a hit! I knew things were going well when my roommate had to go to the bathroom and asked if we could pause the movie so she wouldn't miss any--and then everyone else there was like "oh good--it's paused--I can go to the bathroom/get a drink/etc now." They were in.

We have watched a movie or two a week since then. And tonight, we are watching Rocky V.

You might ask why this is so historic. Well, let's go back to Christmas break 1998. I had never seen much of Rocky before, but my brother Russell was watching Rocky II and I sat down and watched it with him. And I was hooked. For the next two weeks I watched every Rocky movie twice (well, besides Rocky V...we'll get to that soon)--I think I even watched three Rocky movies on Christmas day! It was so wonderful--I love instant gratification, and before me were 5 movies I was able to discover for the first time.

That was until I saw Rocky V. All I wanted after Rocky IV was an endless supply of more Rocky movies. But then I watched Rocky V and was saddened by the harsh reality that, indeed, there can be too much of a good thing. Or maybe just that Rocky V wasn't good at all, it was an awful movie, and it was good they stopped making the movies. (kind of like when my obsession for Star Wars died after watching the Star Wars Holiday Special--I was elated for a hidden seventh movie, but it was really awful).

However, as my roommate has never seen Rocky V and others say it really isn't that bad (though others say it is and refuse to come watch it tonight), we are watching it to night. It's been nine years. Maybe I'll have changed my mind.

But even if it is bad, we are now privileged to have a sixth installment that just came out last year and was surprisingly good! So my faith in Sly and the Rocky series has returned, and thanks to an early Christmas present, I now own all six movies and can only hope they keep on making more...
