Fun Experiment

My dad had this article on his blog:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/13/your-money/13shortcuts.html?src=me&ref=general

It talks about how we use way too much soap in our washing machines and dishwashers. The article says you can do a test to see if you have used too much soap:

Stick a clean towel in your washing machine. DO NOT put any soap in. Turn the washer on HOT for 5 minutes and then look in and see if there are soap bubbles! If there are, then it means your towel/everything you wash absorbs some of the soap because you use too much!

I did that tonight and after five minutes I was shocked to see my washing machine FILLED with soap bubbles! It was crazy! I should have taken a picture! And I will note that I usually only fill the cap halfway.

The article said you probably use 10-15 times more soap than you need to!

Anyway, try it out.

  1. Isn't it crazy how much we use. I haven't done that experiment(although, I will)

Along with using too much detergent, the kind we are using(like Tide, Gain, etc) have such harsh chemicals that are not good for your machine OR us as people. Tide, especially, has been linked to asthma in children(more so at night). It is in their pj's, bed sheets, etc. The stuff that is in those products is awful.

My grandparents have been using Shaklee products, for nearly 40 years. I just started using them about 6 months ago in my home and its amazing what a difference its made. This link: http://consciousliving.myshaklee.com/us/en/products.php?sku=00159
is just one of the detergents they have.

Anyways, thanks for sharing the link and story. I will have to do that experiment soon. :)

    Take care!
